Getting to Finnish Lapland from the USA is simpler than most people expect. This winter Finnair flies nonstop to Helsinki from New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Dallas, and from Helsinki it is one short flight north to Ivalo, 35 to 45 minutes from our hotels.
This guide covers the nonstop flights for winter 2026/27, the best option from your part of the country, and what to know before you fly. For every way into the far north, including the train and the road, see our guide on how to get to Lapland.
The short answer
Fly Finnair nonstop to Helsinki overnight, change planes once, and land in Ivalo about an hour and a half later. You leave the US in the evening and arrive in Lapland the next afternoon or evening, on one ticket, with your bags checked all the way through.
Nonstop flights from the USA to Helsinki this winter
Four US cities have nonstop Finnair flights to Helsinki in winter 2026/27. All of them leave in the evening and land in Helsinki between late morning and mid-afternoon the next day.
From | Flights | Time to Helsinki | Season |
New York (JFK) | Daily | about 8 hours | All winter |
Dallas (DFW) | Daily | about 9.5 hours | All winter |
Los Angeles (LAX) | 3 a week | about 10.5 hours | All winter |
Miami (MIA) | 3 a week, up to 5 over the holidays | about 9.5 hours | 28 Nov 2026 to 25 Mar 2027 |
Finnair is a member of the oneworld alliance with American Airlines, so you can connect from most other US cities to one of these four gateways on a single ticket.
From your part of the US
New York and New Jersey
The daily Finnair flight from JFK is the quickest way to Lapland from anywhere in the US, at about eight hours to Helsinki. New Jersey travellers usually fly from JFK too. If Newark suits you better, you can fly from Newark to Frankfurt or Munich and connect straight to Ivalo from there.
California
Finnair flies nonstop from Los Angeles three times a week. From San Francisco, San Diego and the rest of California, the easiest options are a short hop to LAX for the Helsinki flight, or a connection through Dallas or New York.
Florida
From late November to late March, Finnair flies nonstop from Miami, which lines up neatly with the northern lights and snow season. From Orlando, Tampa and the rest of Florida, connect through Miami, or through New York or Dallas on the days Miami does not fly.
Texas and the rest of the US
The daily Dallas flight is the gateway for much of the country. Dallas is a major American Airlines hub, so travellers from Chicago, Denver, Atlanta and dozens of other cities can connect there onto the Helsinki flight.
From Helsinki to Ivalo
Finnair flies from Helsinki to Ivalo several times a day all year, and the flight takes about an hour and a half. Ivalo is a small, friendly airport. You collect your bags within minutes, and we meet you in arrivals for the drive to the hotel.
If you have time to spare, you can also spend a night in Helsinki and continue north on the Santa Claus Express night train to Rovaniemi. From there the public transportation or our transfer brings you the rest of the way, about 290 km (180 miles). Our Rovaniemi to Ivalo guide covers that leg.
Other ways in: via Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich or Vienna
Several European airlines fly straight to Ivalo in winter, which gives you another one-stop option from the US. Lufthansa flies from Frankfurt, Discover Airlines from Munich, Edelweiss from Zurich and Austrian Airlines from Vienna. These suit travellers who fly United, Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian across the Atlantic, or who hold miles with them. Check the flight days when you book, as some of these routes run once or twice a week.
Before you fly
Passport and entry
US citizens do not need a visa for a holiday in Finland. Your passport should be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave Europe, and issued within the last ten years. Finland is in the Schengen area, so you go through passport control once, in Helsinki, and your flight to Ivalo is then a domestic one.
The first time you arrive, the EU’s new Entry/Exit System takes your fingerprints and a photo at the border. The separate ETIAS travel authorisation is not in use yet and has no confirmed start date, so there is nothing to apply for in advance. Any website asking you to pay for ETIAS now is not official.
Connecting in Helsinki
Helsinki Airport is compact and easy to change planes in. Finnair’s minimum connection time from a US flight to a domestic flight is 45 minutes, when both flights are on the same ticket. In winter we suggest choosing a connection of two hours or more, which leaves plenty of time for passport control and a coffee.
Time difference and jet lag
Finland is 7 hours ahead of New York and Miami, 8 hours ahead of Dallas and 10 hours ahead of Los Angeles. The overnight flights help: sleep on the plane, spend the first afternoon outdoors in the daylight, and keep the first evening simple.
