How to get to our destinations?

All of our destinations, Nellim, Muotka, Inari, Juutua and Nangu, are easily reachable whether you are arriving by land or air transportation.

If you wish to fly, our nearest airport is at Ivalo. The flight between Helsinki and Ivalo is approximately 1,5 hours.  Finnair operates daily between Helsinki and Ivalo all year around. If you wish to arrive by land, we recommend to take a train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi and then a bus from Rovaniemi to Ivalo.
You can check the train schedules from VR.fi and the bus schedules from Matkahuolto

We arrange transportation services between Ivalo Airport and our destinations. You can check the rates and make a booking in our online store or via email to sales@wildernesshotels.fi. Most of our ready-made packages include airport transfers, unless otherwise specified in the package description.

When does the winter in Lapland begin?

The winter season in northern Finland begins in November. During the winter, temperature can vary between -10˚C and -25˚C and on the coldest days the temperature may drop all the way to -40 ˚C.

Please note that weather conditions vary from year to year and it is advisable to check the weather conditions before your arrival. You can check the weather on weather service sites such as http://www.foreca.fi, http://www.yr.no/ or http://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi.

What clothes do I need for outdoor winter activities?

The winter clothing package we offer includes thermal overalls, boots and gloves. Winter clothing is included in all our activity packages.

Please bring good base and mid-layers, thermal underwear, a fleece jacket or wool sweater, a beanie, a scarf, wool socks, as well as lighter clothing for possible warmer days. We recommend avoiding cotton-based materials because they get wet easily.

What is the best time to see the Northern lights?

The Aurora Borealis can be seen from the end of August to the end of April. During these months, the nights are dark, which is essential for the Northern Lights to be visible. Please note that the weather is another factor when you want to see Northern Lights. Clear skies are ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, but thanks to the microclimates in Lapland, there’s always the chance that there may be openings even in the cloudy sky.

Is it totally dark during polar night? Is it safe to take part in activities?

Although the sun does not rise, there´s few hours of light around noon. Snow makes a big difference and it makes it feel a lot less dark outside.

All the activities are safe to take part in during polar night. Day time activities are scheduled to take place during those few hours of light around noon.

Can I drive my own snowmobile on the safari?

The rates are per person based on shared snowmobile. If you wish to drive your own snowmobile, you can upgrade the activity in our online store or via email to sales@wildernesshotels.fi.

Can I have my child to sit in the back of the snowmobile that I’m driving?

Children under 15 years old participating in snowmobile activities will sit on a sledge pulled by our guide.

Can I join the activities if I’m pregnant?

When participating in any of our activities, it is important that you inform our guides about any health or kinematical issues beforehand. Our snowmobile and husky safaris are not recommendable for pregnant women due to the vibrations of uneven tracks and the exhaust fumes of the snowmobiles. Please discuss with your doctor if you feel unsecure about the activities you are taking part in.
