Winter in northern Finland starts in November. During this season, temperatures can range from -10˚C to -25˚C, and on the coldest days, they can drop to as low as -40˚C. Weather conditions can vary each year, so it's a good idea to check the forecast before your trip. You can find up-to-date weather information on sites like Foreca, Yr, or Ilmatieteenlaitos.
For outdoor winter activities, we provide a winter clothing package that includes thermal overalls, boots, and gloves.
This package is included in all our ready-made winter packages. In addition to the provided gear, we recommend bringing good base and mid-layers. This includes thermal underwear, a fleece jacket or wool sweater, a beanie, a scarf, and wool socks.
It's also a good idea to have lighter clothing for warmer days. We advise against cotton-based materials because they get wet easily and lose their insulating properties.
The best time to see the Northern Lights is from the end of August to mid-April. During these months, the nights are dark, which is essential for the Northern Lights to be visible. Weather conditions also play a crucial role. Clear skies are ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, but thanks to the microclimates in Lapland, there’s always a chance that there may be openings even in a cloudy sky.
Although the sun does not rise from November until mid January, there are a few hours of light around noon. Snow makes a big difference and it feels a lot less dark outside. All activities are safe to take part in during polar night. Daytime activities are scheduled to take place during those few hours of light around noon.
All our activities and packages are based on guided group activities. However, most of them can be organized privately, except for activities with Huskies or Reindeer.
Conditions and rates for private activity bookings should be requested in advance by email at sales@wildernesshotels.fi.
The rates are per person based on a shared snowmobile. If you wish to drive your own snowmobile, you can upgrade the activity with paying an extra fee in our online store or via email to sales@wildernesshotels.fi.
When participating in any of our activities, it is important that you inform our guides about any health or kinematic issues beforehand. Our snowmobile and husky safaris are not recommended for pregnant women due to the vibrations of uneven tracks and the exhaust fumes of the snowmobiles. Please discuss with your doctor if you feel unsure about the activities you are taking part in.
